FAQs

Elderflower and Elderberry

What is the difference between Elderflower and Elderberry?

Both are delicious!

Our Elderflower products are made from the handpicked blossoms of the Elder tree. This range is light golden in colour, and features bright, fresh floral characteristics with notes of lychees, flowers and flinty sauvignon blanc. 'Refreshing' is the most common word people use when tasting it.

Our Elderberry products are made from the berries of the Elder tree. This range is a rich ruby red colour, and the flavour profile is deep, rich and complex, with subtle tones of mulberry, blackcurrant and pinot noir.  Elderberries are reputed to have nearly 3 times the anti-oxidant value of cranberries and blueberries. They are rich in bioflavonoids, especially anthocyanins which are responsible for their deep purple (almost black) colouring.

Are there any preservatives, colours or additives?

No, our products are naturally made, without colours, preservatives, flavourings or additives.

What about allergies?

All of our products are free from egg, onion, gluten and nuts.

Is it Vegan?

Yes, all of our products are suitable for vegans.

How do I dilute the concentrates?

Ashbolt concentrates are stronger than most cordial mixers. The elderflower concentrate can be diluted around 1 in 10 to 1 in 12; and the elderberry concentrate around 1 in 20. But really, just dilute to your own personal taste. You can make the elderflower go even further with the addition of a slice of ginger and lemon in hot water. Allow to cool a little before adding elderflower (to maximise properties).

Is it safe for children and for pregnant women?

Elderflower and berry was traditionally used to treat 'poorly' young children. We have a number of pregnant women and nursing mothers who use our drinks as an alternative to alcohol (often serving in champagne glasses, so they don’t feel left out!). However, if you have any concerns at all, please consult your doctor.

What are the health benefits?

Elderflower and berry are both great for colds and flu - the flower tends to be used to aid sleeping and to clear toxins and colds, and the berry is a great immune builder. Read more about the health benefits here.

Olive Oil

Is Ashbolt Olive Oil extra virgin cold pressed?

Ashbolt Olive Oils are pressed within a few hours of harvest and are pressed without heat.

How should I keep my olive oil?

Always store oil in a cool dark place - a dark low cupboard is perfect. The oil may solidify if kept in the fridge. If this ever occurs, allow to slowly reach room temperature and it will become clear again.

Why is it more expensive than supermarket brands?

Cool climate olives usually have lower yields. Also, growing and producing any product in small volumes to gold medal quality is expensive. We intensively manage our grove and use lots of organic composts to fertilise our trees.
